The flag of Kenya was adopted on December 12th 1963 after it gained it's independance from Great Britain.
The Kenyan flag consists of four different coloured horizontal stripes - black, red, green and white. The flag also contains an emblem in the center of a Masai warrior's sheild and spears. The black symbolises the Kenyan majority population. The red symbolies the blood shed by Mau Mau warriors. The green symbolises Kenya's agriculture and natural resources. The white represents peace. The central emblem represents Kenya's fight for freedom.
The Kenyan flag is based on the Kenyan African National Union flag (KANU), the party which led the fight for freedom and independence for Kenya.
The country changed its name from the Dominion of Kenya to the Republic of Kenya in 1964.
