The current Iranian flag was accepted on 29th July, 1980. It consists of three horizontal stripes; green, white amd red.

The colours are symbolic to the Islamic people. Green, which is the top stripe symbolises Islam, white, which is in the middle symbolises peace, and red, which is at the bottom symbolises courage. These colours date back to the mid-18th century.

The colour green is used to symbolise Islam throughout the Islamicc community.

The symbol in the centre of the flag, on the white stripe is used to symbolise the five principles of Islam. The sword symbolises the strength of the Islamic people.

At the bottom of the green stripe and at the top of the red stripe written in white, repeated 22 times, are the Islami words "Allahu Allahu", which translated into English says " God is greater than to be described."
