The current Indonesian national flag was introduced on 17th August, 1945 during the Indonesian Independence Day. In Indonesian, the flag is known as Sang Merah Putih.
The design of the flag, which consists of two horizontal stripes; the top one red, the bottom one white, has been the same for over 60 years.
Originally, the colours of the flag were taken fron the 13th century Majapahit Empire's banner. During the early 20th century, nationalists and students revived the colours as an expression of nationalism against the Dutch.
In Java during 1928, the flag was flown for the first time. But it was banned because of dutch rule. It was then accepted on 17th August, 1945- the day independance was declared. |
