The Indian flag was accepted on 22nd July, 1947, by India's constituent assembly.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in the colours; deep saffron, white and green. The colours are symbolic; saffron which is the colour of the the top stripe, symbolises sacrifice, courage and the sprit of renunciation, white which is
the colour of the middle stripe, symbolises truth and purity, and green which is the colour of the bottom stripe, symbolises fertility and faith.
In the centre of the flag, on the white stripe is a blue wheel. This is used to portray the Dharma Chakra which in the Sarnath Lion Capital, is the wheel of law. This symbol dates back to the 200th centure BC.
The flag as a whole is a symbol of freedom. As known by Prime Minister Pandit Nehru, the flag isn't only a symbol of freedom for the people of India, but also for the freedom of everyone in the world.
