The Icelandish flag was officially described in Law No.34, set out on June 17th 1944, the day Iceland became a Republic. The flag contains blue to represent the sky, white to represent the cross, and a fiery red cross to signify war.
Iceland's first National flag was a white cross on a dark blue background. It was first paraded in 1897, with the modern flag dating back to 1915, when a ree cross was inserted into the white one. It was adopted in 1918 and became the national flag when the country gained indepedence from Denmark, in 1944.
