Country: Hungary Abbreviation: HUN
Notes:

On 1st October, 1957, the current Hungarian flag was accepted. It consisted of three horizontal stripes; the top stripe being red, the middle stripe being white, and the bottom stripe being green. Before this flag was introduced however, a similar flag was used but consisted of the Hungarian coat of arms in the centre of the flag on the white stripe. This flag was used from 1921 to 1946.

The colours on the flag date back to when King Matthias II was in power during the 9th century.

The colours used on the flag are symbolic; the red representing strength and the blood spilt for the fatherland, white representing freedom, fidelity and faithfulness, and the green representing hope and the Hungarian land.

It is also said that the pattern of the colours was taken from the French tricolour during the French Revolution.

It was during 1848/49 when the Hungarian flag was first introduced. It was used during the revolutiona against the Habsburgs.

This revolution failed and the flag was banned by the Austrian Emperor after the Revolution. But after downfall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during 1918, the flag was re-instated to Hungary.
