Country: Hong Kong Abbreviation: HKG
Notes:

On the 16th February, 1990, the current flag of Hong Kong was accepted. On 10 August, 1996, the Preparatory Committee gave their support to it. But, it was on the 1st July 1997 when the flag was officially hoisted.

The flag consists of a red background with a white flower. The flag was given the colour red because it is China's festival colour and the five stars remind the people of Hong Kong about the communist nature of China. The white flower that the stars are on is known as the Bauhinia Blakeana and is the official symbol of Hong Kong.

Originally, the flag of Hong Kong was blue with the Hong Kong coat of arms on a white circle on the right hand side with the Union Jack in the upper left hnd corner. This flag was used from 27th July 1959 to 30th June 1997 while the Britsh were ruling Hong Kong.
