On 16th February, 1866, the current Honduran flag was accepted. It comprises three horizontal stripes - the top and bottom stripes are blue and the middle stripe is white. On the centre of the white stripe is an 'X' shape made out of five small, blue five-pointed stars. The design of this flag was based on the Federal Republic of Central America's flag.
The five stars symbolise the nations of the earlier Federal Republic of Central America - Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador and the optimism of them joining as one once again.
The colours used on the flag are symbolic - the two blue stripes symbolise the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, and the white stripe symbloises the the land in between them. |
