The Guinea-Bissau flag was approved on 24th September, 1973. The flag consists of the Pan-African colours: red, gold and green. The red stripe is vertical and the green and gold stripes are horizontal. On the red stripe of the flag is the black African star.
The black star represents the unity of the African people. Red represents the blood of the people killed, fighting for independence from the Portugese. Green represents the forests and symbolises hope. Gold represents the sun and mineral wealth.
The Guinea-Bissau flag's pattern inspired the design of the Ghanaian flag.
