Olympic flags of the Competing Nations

flag

Country: Ghana Abbreviation: GHA
Notes:

The national flag of Ghana consists of three horizontal stripes, (a tricolour) a red stripe at the top, a gold stripe in the middle and a green stripe at the bottom.

It was designed in 1957 by Mrs.Theodosia Salome Okoh to replace the United Kingdom's flag but was replaced in 1964 with a flag that instead of being gold in the middle, was white. This was a feature for the Convention Peoples' party because at that time they were ruling. This was then changed in 1966, back to Mrs. Theodosia Salome Okoh's design when Kwame Nkrumah was removed from office.

The red on the flag symbolises the blood of the people that died trying to achieve independence, gold symbolises the country's mineral wealth and green represents the natural wealth of the country; the vegetation and fertility of the land and it's rich forests. On the gold stripe is a five-pointed star symbolising the unity of the people in the struggle to achieve freedom. This black star gives rise to the nickname of the Ghanaian national football team - the Black Stars.

The Ghanaian flag was the first African flag to consist of the Pan-African colours (Red, Gold and Green), after the flag of Ethiopia.
