| Notes: |
The flag of Equatorial Guinea was originally adopted on October 12, 1968. However during the dictatorship of Francisco Nguema (1972-79) the emblem in the flag was changed, but the original 1968 flag was restored on August 21, 1979 when the country gained independence.
The flag is a horizontal tricolor, with green, white and red stripes and a blue triangle at its hoist side. The green stripe represents the natural resources and lush green jungles of the country. The White stripe symbolises peace and the red stripe represents the fight for independence. The blue triangle symbolizes the sea, which connects the islands to the main part of the country.
In the middle of the flag, on the white stripe, there is the coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea. This coat of arms was also originally from 1968 and again restored after independence on August 21, 1979. It shows a silver shield, which contains a mangrove tree with six yellow stars above it. The stars represent the mainland and islands. Underneath the shield the national motto of Equatorial Guinea is shown: Unidad Paz Justicia - Unity, Peace, Justice. |
