| Notes: |
The flag of El Salvador is based on the flag of the United Provinces of Central America. It was originally used in 1822, then abandoned in 1865, reinstated in 1912 and last confirmed on September 27th 1972. Between 1865 and 1912 a flag based on the flag of the United States was used. It consisted of alternating blue and white stripes and a red area containing white stars.
For civil purposes a similar flag is used minus the central device and with a 3.5 aspect ratio. This is also used as an alternative for state purposes. Sometimes this flag is seen with a motto in yellow lettering ‘DIOS UNION LIBERTAD’ which is Spanish for God, Union, Liberty.
