The current Costa Rica National Flag was based on the Argentinian National flag and designed by the First Lady, Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno in 1848.
The flag consists of 5 coloured horizontal bands, blue, white, red, white and blue. The blue represents the sky, hope and eternity, whilst the white symbolizes wisdom and peace, and the red the warmth of the nation as well as the blood they spilt in their fight for freedom.
The coat of arms is situated in the middle red band nearer the hoist side.
