| Notes: |
This flag was adopted on November 25, 1975 upon the independence of Suriname and is formed by five horizontal bands. The top and bottom stripes are green (double width), the middle stripe is red (quadruple width) and this is bordered by two single width white stripes above and below. In the centre of the red stripe is a large, yellow five pointed star.
The star symbolises the unity of the five main ethnic groups of the nation which are Creoles, Asian Indians, Chinese American Indians and Europeans. The red stripe represents progress and love. The green stands for the natural resources of the land and for hope. The white bands stand for peace and justice. Originally, the colours represented three of Suriname’s political parties. |
