The current flag of Saint Lucia was adopted on March 1, 1967. Saint Lucia was ruled by the British from 1814 to 22 February 1979. It was also settled by France in 1650. Saint Lucia used the same flag as Martinique one of its neighbouring islands to the north. The Saint Lucian flag was designed in 1967 but some changes were made to it in 1979.
Saint Lucia's Government describe the flag like this: the blue colour represents fidelity, the sky and the surrounding water. Sunshine on Saint Lucia is represented by the Gold colour. The Black and white on the flag represents the unity between black and white races, how they live together and work together. The three triangles shape is an isosceles triangle, rising sheer out of the sea towards the sky; it is a symbol of aspirations and the hope of the people of Saint Lucia.
