The flag of Romania was adopted on 27th December, 1989. This flag consists of 3 horizontal stripes, red, yellow and blue and was introduced by nationalists in 1848. The flag itself use to be Horizontal but it was changed to its present shape in 1867 after being influenced by the French flag. Romania was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, they gained independence in 1877. The coat of arms was in the centre of the flag between 1867 and 1989.

All three colours in the flag represent Moldova and Walachia the two principalities that united to form Romania in 1859.
