Papua New Guinea's flag was adopted on 1st July 1971. It depicts the southern cross; in the fly, a raggiana bird of paradise is silhouetted. The flag designer was only 15 years oldschoolgirl Susan Huhume, who won a nationwide competition for a new flag design in 1971.
Red and Black are used in the logo because they are traditional colours of many Papua new guinean tribes. The bird of paradise is also found on the National Coat of Arms. |
