The flag of Pakistan was adopted on 14th August, 1947 after separation from India and independence from Britain. Before the modern flag the flag of Pakistan use to be plain green with white crescent and the star, which only represented the Muslims in India. This flag was created in 1906.
When Pakistan gained independence from India there was two parts to the country, one on the eastern side of India and the other on the west with no land bridge between the 2 halves. The flag for the both halves of the country was same. After the separation from India, the Indian government did not allow Pakistani people to fly over their territory from one half of the country to the other. East Pakistan and India allied in a war against West Pakistan in December 1971. After the resulting victory for East Pakistan and India, East Pakistan became Bangladesh.
The actual Pakistani flag was made in 1947 but there were some changes made in 1971 after the war.
The green colour on the Pakistani flag is a traditional Islamic colour and the white colour symbolises peace. The green represents the Muslim majority in Pakistan and white represents non-Muslim minority. The crescent and the star are symbols of light and knowledge.
According to surveys in 2004 the Muslim minority in Pakistan was 95% and non-Muslim was 5%. |
