Oman's national flag consists of three stripes (white, green and red) with a red bar on the left containing the national emblem of the country. The white stands for purity and peace, the green for fertility and mountains. The red stands for the battles against foreign invaders. Red is also used as it is the colour of the former flag of the nation.

Until 1970, Oman simply used a plain red banner of the indigenous people, the Kharijite Muslims. In 1970, the sultan introduced a completeky new set of National flags.; which is where the new flag came from. It has been used ever since this date.
