Norway's flag is red with an indigo blue Scandinavian cross outlined in white that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side in the style of the Danish flag, the Dannenborg.
It is difficult to establish what the earliest flag of Norway looked like. But, the first known flag was shared with Denmark (between the 16th century and 1814); as it was in union with the country.
In 1814, Norway gained its independence from Denmark, and adopted that flag. It contained the Norwegian lion in the canton. This flag was only used until 1821. The curent flag was adopted in 1899, and has stayed the same since then. |
