Nauru's flag was first lifted on independence day (January 1968). It depicts Nauru's geographical position, one degree below the equator. The gold horizontal line is said to represent the equator with the star representing the island itself. It has 12 points on the star because each point represents one of the 12 indigenous tribes on the island. Blue is used to show the Pacific Ocean where the country is located. |
