The Mozambique national flag was adopted on May 1st, 1983. It includes an image of an AK-47 and it is the only national flag to contain a gun.
The original flag of the "Frente da Libertacao da Mocambique", the leading political party of the time in Mozambique; also had green, black and yellow horizontal stripes on the flag. After they were given Independence from South Africa, the colours were rearranged and the modern National Flag was born. This alteration was in 1983, with the star of Marxism made larger.
The green stands for the wealth of the land, the white signifying peace, the black representing the African continen; the yellow symbolises the minerals within the country and the red represents the struggle for independence. The rifle on the flag stands for defence, with the open book symbolising education. |
