Mauritania's flag has been used since 1st April 1959. Green and gold, which are used in the flag, signify the pan-african colours.

Green is also used to symbolise theIslamic faith, with gold to signify sand of the Sahara Desert. The crescent moon and star within this flag are to show the major religion within the religion and the nation, as they are well known Islam symbols.
