Olympic flags of the Competing Nations

Country: Malta Abbreviation: MLT
Notes:

The Maltese flag is a basic two colour flag; with white on the left and red on the right side of the flag. These two colours were used as they signfiy the colours from the arms of Malta.

It is tradition that the colours of the flag were awarded to Malta by Count Roger of Sicily, in the year of 1091.

Count Roger's banner was chequered red and white; a part of this set was given to Malta. On the other hand, some people firmly deny these claims and suggest that it is simply a myth.

Malta was a key stronghold during the Crusades, with much of the country being influenced some how by the invaders of the landscape. Which was mostly the Knights of Malta.

Their badge contained the Maltese cross, and their arms contained a white cross on a red background. From these colours came the shield that was used by the Maltese Knights during the colonial age.

In 1943, the George Cross Medal was added to the shield. The malta flag has been adapted to include all of these points and was created because of the independence of the country. This flag is unique in the way that it is the only country to have decoration from another country (United Kingdom).
