Since the creation of the state in 1945, the Macedonian Republic have used three flags.
The first flag was created in 1945, when Macedonia were a part of People's Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. This flag was red containing a star with five points, which was outlined in yellow, inside the canton.
This flag was used until 1991, when Macedonia launched a new flag containing the Vergina Sun. However this flag was only used until 1995, when a complaint was made by neighbouring Greece; who had an ongoing argument with the country surrounding the name and symbols of the country.
They submitted this request to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) for copyright over the Vergina sun, used in the Macedonian flag. In 1995, the flag was changed after the dispute with Greece, as an agreement to establish economical relations between the countries. This flag was altered to its present one, named the Macedonian Sun. Like the last flags it uses the traditional yellow on red format; however know displays an eight pointed star rather than a five pointed one.
This new flag represents the "new son of liberty",with the yellow son extending to the edges of the red fields, suggesting a new beginning. |
