The current flag of Luxembourg was adopted on 23 June, 1972. The current flag was influenced by the French flag. Luxembourg designed a horizontal flag in 1845 after declaring independence from Germany in 1835.

The Luxembourg flag's colours have their origins in the 13th century coat of arms of Luxembourg's first Grand Duke 'William I'.
