The flag of Lesotho consists of a horizontal blue, white and green tricolour and features a black mokorotlo (basotho hat) in the middle. The current flag was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lesothos independence from the United Kingdom. It reflects the peaceful orientation that the country intended to adopt.

In September 2008 The Lesotho National Assembly approved the current Lesotho flag which was adopted in October of the same year. There were four proposed designs which included a brown basotho hat instead of the shield that was on the former flag. In order to represent Lesotho properly as a black nation the brown hat was replaced with a black basotho hat.
